Beginning Again

February 26th, 2008

Day One

My Foot landed near the exile (Building S40, the Information Technology Building) because I had an Elementary Computing class. Then, when I entered that building I started wandering inside it.  I never had any class in it before.  The faces of students was not familiar nor the building itself.

At 8 O’clock I went inside the class which was empty and dark, lighted it with a single touch of my finger then sat and started reading a novel while waiting for the doctor to come. some students came and sat.  We waited and waited but nobody showed up.  at last all of them left but I stayed there.  I read some chapters then left the whole building.

While walking I began to think about this ridiculous course.  I wonder if there is anybody at my university who cannot use Microsoft Office! I suppose that the majority of students learnt how to use them in high school.  I hate office when it comes to learning because office suit can become very boring.

Anyway, I reached S17 (English Language & Literature Building) and I was delighted for being at home, I recognized some face and knew the employees and doctors.  Then, I went to The English Language Club and sat there for a couple of hours.

Then I left the club because I had another class.  Unfortunately, the doctor never showed up which disappointed me and some of the guys.  Anyway, I left the building with some of the students and we had a walk behind the mosque.  The place there is wonderful.  The Green Grass was under our shoes and the leafs of trees were above our heads; and we smelled many perfumes of nature, which make the heart relax, from roses and trees.

After this refreshing walk we prayed then chatted for an hour. Then, I had to leave because I have a class.  I attended the two classes I have and I was satisfied because the Doctors appeared.  After that I went to the Club again until 4 O’clock as I went to the bus (TATA, I might mention some tales about it someday) and then reached home.

When I returned home I looked at the timetable and discovered that I do not have Elementary Computing  class today! which means that……. Eye-rolling

117 Days left……

Registration, The Last Sight

February 25th, 2008

Registering courses is one of the toughest moments in a journey of a student who studies at the University of Bahrain.  First, any student have to add the subject that he wants in the Early Registration Period.  Then, when the Add/Drop period begins all the students can view their timetable online.  Most of the times students do not get all the subjects (or sections) that they registered.

This Semester, I registered early as usual through the Internet but I could not add all the courses that I want because I should take 7 courses but the maximum courses that one can register online is 6.  Therefore, I had to go to the registration building  and write the courses that I want in a special form.  I was not sure that those forms were credible because of the large number of forms in the box which was allocated for them.

In the registration night, after few months of the previous registration, I was waiting for the beginning of the  online registration to see whether I got all the subjects that I wanted or not.  I was expecting to have some troubles as usual because it became a tradition that I don’t get the desired courses.

Hours ran fast while I checked the Online registration system more than a hundred times.  the clock began to tick faster than before and I knew that the schedules will be online anytime.  I expected that the servers will be down as a result of the masses of students who want to use the registration system.  Moreover, my mind was wondering, "What would happen if they gave me six subjects only?"  soon these question marks disappeared because I checked the online schedule and I had them all.

6

I was happy but at the same time I was not.  it was the last registration that I witnessed and I felt that I need some action before I graduate.

The next day I went to the university to stamp the timetable for the last time in my life ( Hopefully), I finished the procedures faster than my expectation which disappointed me.  I wanted to wait six or seven hours in the Queue, but I did not.  I wanted somebody to tell me that I have to make somebody sign at a couple of papers, but nobody made me.  I wanted to see many people that I know and complain, but unlike every year it never happened.

Anyway, I left the university after I met few guys.

The next day while I was checking the courses I discovered that a new elective course, which I wanted, was opened.  I tried to replace it with one of the courses (I hate Linguistics), but a message appeared:

5

I could not change anything online because I have seven subjects.  Normal students should have between 4 - 6 courses per semester.  Therefore, I had to go to the university again to replace the course.  A large smile was drawn across my face because I could write in my Auto-Biography (After I become famous, or old) that I suffered in registering a  particular course which affected my emotions negatively or crippled my career.  Other people would have written in the newspapers about this incident or blamed the students council for not solving it (Thanks God they are gone, or haven’t they?).

Anyway, I went to the registration at the University campus after a few days and went to the registration specialist  who gave me the course that I want with absolute ease.

I shall miss the Add/Drop period for a long time. Sad

University begins tomorrow……..

Day One, Bahrain is Alive Again!

February 10th, 2008

Early at the mornings, I and a friend go out to change our mood.  for the past few days Bahrain looked dead at that moments, nothing seemed to be interesting.  I felt that something was wrong in Bahrain.

Yesterday, I went out again at that moment.  The air smelled fresh, streets were lively and people were everywhere.  It was the first day of school.  While I wandered with my friend, the streets looked more beautiful with all of those lovely kids and stubborn teenagers (Who looked nothing but happy).  Some of those fighting students were waiting for their buses, others were walking to their local schools.  You can also see some guys stalking girls and the other way around sometimes.  In addition,  Roads were crowded, traffic jams occurred all over the place.  Yet, traffic jam was not the only concern for drivers, they have to be double careful because they would never know when a little boy tries to cross the street.

These scenes were amazing, they reminded me of many events which occurred while I was a student at schools.  Passing near my Elementary, Middle and high school made me wish that those days return.

Anyway, after seeing what we have seen, I looked at ourselves and all what I have noted is a couple of guys who wander aimlessly to find a good restaurant.

Before The Final Battle

February 7th, 2008

Finished doing exams last week.  and some days ago I checked the results which declared that my plan will go on as expected. I will graduate, I jumped over all the handicaps so far.

Three years and a half passed like a thunder jolt, I still recall the first day at the University.  it is queer how life runs fast.  University transformed my personality very much.  I acquired more experience and gained much knowledge.

The vacation is cool till now.  I am teaching people how to use Flash, which is a delight for me.  I always love to share me humble knowledge with other people.  In addition, I am reading for pleasure, which is something I have not done for a long time because of the college requirements (and my laziness Tongue out).  When they tell us to read a novel at the University, I just ignore the readings and when an exam appears on the horizon I quickly start it and finish it in two days or one, which makes me skip some paragraphs Sad.  But now I do not have to skip or scan anything nor am I obliged to finish the reading before a deadline; it is just me and the book, like the ancient times.

As for Software Localization I have not started working on a new project yet.  I am to update The World Browser (A very good browser) translation soon.  Reading seems to consume much of me free time.   another thing which takes some of my time is a web-based game called Travian.  I never liked to play an online game before, but this game attracted me for its simplicity.  just make orders and leave the Website for some time.

Hopefully (and sadly), this would be my last vacation at the university.  Next time I will be on vacation I would either be unemployed Tongue out or at my annual vacation.  However, I still have 20 days to relax now, and then I will spend my last three months between the lovely warm arms of the University of Bahrain.

Sleepless in a Holiday morning!

January 11th, 2008

I stayed awake all the night long yesterday doing some university projects.  Then, I prayed Al-Fajir prayer and made some touches on the projects.  At 6 A.M I decided to go and get some sleep.

However, once I placed my head on the pillow I heard that sound, ” Knock, Knock, Knock,” iron was hitting iron hardly.  I forgot about sleeping because it is impossible to sleep with the sound of a cruel hammer. I wondered what  evil men  would work at this time of the day and rob us from a relaxation moment! I AM TIRED I NEED SOME SLEEP, THEY SHOULD NOT BOTHER US AT THIS TIME OF THE DAY!!

Then, I stopped to think, is it their mistake that they work now or not?  I will not work at that time of the day at this cold winter.  Their boss is the person who should be blamed.  He is the one who made them do it.  He probably chose that time in order to exploit them more by making them work for longer hours for the same tiny payment.

I flipped my memories and I remember the strong protest done by the construction contractors when the government banned them from making the employees work under the hot sun. of course they will because it would harm their business because in their dictionary profit is more important than any soul.  They would protest when somebody suggests that workers must have suitable transportation methods which should replace  Six-Wheels.  But no, it would be too expensive for the contractors to treat their employees like human and some contractors might stupidly pretend to feel sympathetic toward workers and claim that if he provided workers with air-condition transportation they will catch cold because of the transformation from an air-conditioned area to a hot dry area :S

As I continued thinking, more ideas came to my head and with time the hard knocks of the hammer turned into smooth music and I fell asleep.

A New Year!

January 1st, 2008

A new year was born today, as we left 2007 and received 2008.  some of the people feels enthusiastic about this new brand year, and some thinks that it would be a complete disaster.

The concept of a new year means for some people that they have a new sheet in which they could rewrite their entire personality or life.  Some people have what they call a “New Year’s Resolution” where they claim that they would be committed to doing or not doing something. For example, someone could say that his new year’s resolution is to stop eating junk food. Anyway, most of the times people would forget about their resolution mainly because they made a decision in the new year, and they will likely forget about it when they feel that the year is not new anymore.  I think that any person would feel more committed to his resolution if he did not connect it with time. Time passes fast, but believes stay still.  If you cannot stick to your New Year’s Resolution try to stick to what you should call, “My Own Resolution.” Ignore time and make your move whether it is January or September.

On the other hand,  some people feel afraid about what problems will occur in this year.  They would watch or read about the Astrologers‘ predictions, and they will really believe what they are told and that there is a relationship between Mars and Earth even though they deny believing anything they heard.  Anyway, I think that if someone listened to New Year’s Prediction ( Or Horoscope ) and denied believing it then he would contradict himself, why should you notice something that you do not believe without a clear reason? it would be okay if you said that you listen to these things for fun, or for curiosity. But discussing the predictions and the results of them and then claiming that nothing should be believed from this horoscope is totally contradictory.  If you do not believe in horoscope for any reason whether it is religious or mental, then do not discuss it.

At the end, everyone has his own preference and would receive the new year according it.  but it would be the same for me, I had to read for Yesterday’s (Last Year’s) lecture, and I must read for tomorrow.

Exams, again!

November 15th, 2007

Last week, the exams began, and misery began with it.

This year might be the last I spend at my lovely University.  Much I gained from these years, Knowledge, experience and more.  other things have been lost forever.

I had three exams last week.  most of them were a complete tragedy.  However, I feel relieved because I have eliminated 3  exams, and that now only 7 exams left!

it is queer how when we begin Mid-term exams at the University of Bahrain we only finish doing them when the final exam arrives!

Exams, the only thing I hate at the university! even if I liked the subject, exams comes like a poison and kills the subject temporary.

End of rant, time to study for more exams!

The Raven

May 12th, 2007

My good friend Alfardan has posted The Raven
on his Blog.

It is my favorite poem too!
Another great poem by the fabulous Edgar Allan
Poe
.

It is a long poem and I
don’t think that posting the whole text would encourage people
to read. What I can do is posting an audio & a funny satire of the poem
which was an episode of the famous Simpsons T.V show. I think
that this will make the bloggers more interested in the poem

First I will post the video

Then the audio

Death of a Book

April 15th, 2007

I have written this article for Alghad Newspaper, and I want to share it with you.

Death of a Book

I am not just a group of papers,” said the book to his human audience. He sighed “for many years I have enlightened & entertained you. Many scientists would have never reached who they were without my help as I transferred the experience of the previous scientists to them.”

“But we are not scientists,” replied one of the ungrateful humans.

The book looked at the human in a caring way and said, “I know you are not scientists, but you would never enjoy your life without the help of science, most of the inventions are the result of many years of researching.” The book adds, “For ages, people read books for fun and to learn new things.”

Another human stood up, “Yes you did teach scientists and entertain us for years, but today, the fact is that you are dying. After the invention of computer, scientists began to turn to computers, as it is more flexible and it can store a huge amount of information in a small computer, unlike books. Even schools and universities are beginning to minimize the use of books, and it started teaching on the internet (E-learning) instead, which is a good thing because we do not understand anything from learning from the books.”

A third man interrupted “Did I hear entertainment? Nobody reads books for entertainment nowadays; it is a waste of time, why should we spend hours reading a novel while we can watch a movie in a couple of hours?”

At that moment the book burst into tears, “I know I am dying, but at least you should read me if not for entertainment, then for education. It is not my fault the teachers use me in a wrong way, I am not meant to be memorized, but should be understood. How sad am I, the same inventions that I produced, the Television and Computer, are the same things that would end my life!

After hearing this sentence, all the attendance left the hall, leaving the book, who enlightened them in the past, in a total loneliness.

But could loneliness cause the death of the book?

Any comments or feedback?
